Hot days & hot boys

one of the things i hate about australia is the heat and summer.
i hate summer, give me cold, drab days, miserable rain and chilly winds. that i can take.

i cant take stupid hot muggy days - where your elbows and knees start to sweat without even trying..urgh .. its gross. take today for instance, maximum of 39.6 c and minimum or 21. Super hot and super humid - YUCK ... and we're in for more days .. just like today... sigh...

as perth begins to boil in the summer heat, most people run to the nearest shopping centre or cinema to get temporary relief from the heat. what me and mr s do... we run to the nearest cinema - catch us a film and get some relief from the heat.

today we watched avatar - the latest film by james cameron, heard lots of good things about it, so we had high hopes. i loved watching the 3D version of it, bit more expensive but i think its worth it. movie had a good story line, although a bit predictable (no mind bending plot twists), loved the graphics of the environment and the ma'vi people - really smooth and well done, but the best part was perving on sam worthington. kinda puts a smile on your dial.

i'd give it a 9/10 - definitely a summer movie everyone has to watch.

the nanny diaries

i came across this movie long before i could get my hands on the book. i really enjoyed watching the movie, thought it was brilliant, as it gave many interesting insightful tips to raising kids, especially if they arent your own.

i guess what intrigues me the most, is to see how the other, better, wealthier people live. if i were younger i would love to be a nanny for a wealthy family, to be a fly on the wall, to see what their lives would be like. so i guess this movie is a like a fantasy sneak peak into that.

but .. looking at what these poor nannies go through, life isnt so great. i loved the movie, story line, characters (especially harvard hottie) and the fashion. after i finished reading the book, i loved the story even more. Really easy to read, hard to put down. recommend it to anyone who wants a good holiday read. i could easily watch the movie over and over again :o)...

Wilbur the Wildcat

i love wilbur the wildcat, i love watching him at the home games doing stupid crazy stuff and generally acting like an idiot. this cat cracks me up. he has absolutely no shame at all and just loves interacting with the audience, the players and the opposing team. I get so distracted with what ever wilbur's up to ... i miss part of the game, heheh, woops.

cacharel scarlett

i came across this perfume whilst browsing the perfume displays in DJs garden city. not intending to buy anything, just curious to see what the new perfumes from D & G smelt like.
The D & G perfumes were pretty much forgettable, even though there were 5 released at the same time, each named after a super male/female model.

but i did come across this and i was instantly blown away... as soon as i smelt it... i knew i had to buy it... from strawberrynet that is. this tight ass chick aint paying retail! uh uh...
it was a beautiful, sweet, light, fruity and flowery smell that could easily be worn everyday and not give you a headache. i loved the bottle which i thought was unusual and very unique.

so i jumped on strawberrynet ... and there it was... 100ml for $88, not bad i said to myself.... but i wanted to buy more so i would get further discounts...

anyways... 2 months later, i still havent bought the perfume, it is now out of stock on strawberrynet... and i crave it even more!

ai yaaa... guess i'll just go to DJ late night shopping tomorrow and get my fix.

i have also just bought Marc Jacobs perfume - which is super duper nice and i love LOVE LOOOOVVEEEE it... only wear it when i'm going out to somewhere nice.

i just wear my old gucci envy everyday to school - i'm trying to finish it.

what do you wear as an everyday scent?
what's your favourite perfume right now?

share your comments below!
i would love to get to know my readers!

weekend of gluttony

wow.. the weekend just passed... was a total food fest.

we have either eaten at a restaurant or a take away meal from friday night to sunday night.
Most of it was a chinese restaurant of some sort, which means total greasy goodness. but by sunday morning, my stomach did not quite agree..... how ever we had a lunch and dinner date to attend and could not decline.

so to yum cha we went for sunday brunch, at dragon seafood on francis street.
food is good, variety - just the usual, nothing made us excited ...BUT!! the crowds... OMFG the crowds was crazy. sure, the size of the crowd is a good indication of the restaurant's food, must be bloody good.

But geeezz... i definitely dont want to wait 30-40 minutes every time we go to yum cha.
2 thumbs up for great tasting food (prolly really high msg... eheheh)
but i'm not impressed by the crowds.

i'd rather go to our favourite dim sum place, royal seafood on aberdeen street.
5-10 minutes to get a table (no booking) - GREAT variety of foods that make you go.."hmm i'd like to try that" ..."ooo that looks good".... "whats that! i want it "
and no crowds!

a penny for your thoughts...

just a few things currently on my mind....

1. i have school reports to do... and they are the bane of my life.
i'm too tired and too over it. i have some "truths" i need to write about .. but i just don't know how to word it 'nicely' .. ahem... constructively. i use to be good at this, but i have lost it now... guess i'll just go back and recycle some old ones... heheh

2. i caught the little fucking (woops) caterpillar thats been eating my herbs. he was such a fat fucker and i know he's been eating my basil, mint and coriander. he's now rotting in the rubbish bin. i have no sympathy for insects that ruin my herbs.

3. summer is coming soon and i want to lose a few kg, 5 kg to be precise.
sooooo depressing... salads here i come!! :D ... not

4. i want to throw a party for my 30+ birthday, but i just dont have the energy to organise it.
thinking about it makes my head hurt. its gonna be fun, but so much to do...aiyaaaa....

5. i really want to buy a new laptop ... this one is starting to really piss me off now...

6. our garden reticulation is not working .... i dont think i want to know how much that's going to cost.... $$$ ... EEEEEeeeeEEpPPPP!!!

omg... im sooo cranky... i must be pmsing...

lots of travelling next year

since the introduction of budget airlines, s and i have been travelling a lot more then usual.

but every time we see a ticket sale from air asia, virgin or jetstar... it makes us open our wallets and take our passports out to book some sort of flight out of perth.

so now we have a very hectic and exciting travel plan for 2010....

jan 2010: KL & HK for about 10 days

apr 2010: Bali & Jakarta for about 10 days

may 2010: sydney for cousins wedding & s will go to his cousin's wedding in indo too.. (i can't coz of school)

sept 2010: KL & Vietnam...

so it's all very exciting and the new year is coming close...

i just hope we don't do a repeat of my holiday experiences from earlier this year...

new addictions..

i was never a fan of i pods or i phones... only coz i am a techno phobe and not very good with new technologies.... until hubby got an i phone... now im a believer.. and converted.

the i phone is awesome! i cant believe all the things you can do on it! its just too clever and soooo SOOO easy to use. the only thing that sux is the battery life. we have to recharge every single night... which is a bummer, especially for people like me who ALWAYS forget to recharge their phone. im going to stick to my old sony ericsson for now... but i am tempted to get an i phone... i'll just use hubby's for now ;oP

the best thing about the i phone is all the mini applications, which you have to pay and download. but they arent that expensive, so its alll good! the latest app i downloaded is sally's salon. OMG this game is addictive! even my hubby is a master salon manager now... lol too funny :o). we take turns managing the salon.

Jusburger leederville

we were hungry after watching a wildcats game tonight and intended to go to our favourite vietnamese restaurant- tra vinh. but to our dismay and much annoyance - all the main roads in northbridge were closed and blocked off "due to an event". which we learnt much later was the gay and lesbian parade.

soo... wanting to get away from northbridge, we decided to head to leederville and try jusburger. we've heard MANY goods things about this place, so why not?

we settled on the waygyu beef burger with salad and wasabi mayonnaise, with a side dish of onion rings. the burgers are fantastic! but the best part about tonight was the onion rings.
they were the BOMB, i will come back just to eat the onion rings. best onions rings i've ever had.
i took photos of my food but its on the iphone and i haven't figured out how to put photos from the iphone onto a blog yet. so heres a photo from their main website.

chris chun

i know i have written about Chris Chun before, but he's had another exhibition featuring 19 new paintings which i just had to write about. i only wish i was living in sydney so i could see the exhibition for myself. how ever if i did go to see the exhibition in person - i know i would come home with a painting. i dont think i could help myself!

Chris has also kept his website up to date and it now has an online store. how cool is that?
visit his website on www.chrischun.com

not only that but chris has also started a personal blog, i've already added it to one of my favourites. visit the blog on http://chrischunart.blogspot.com/

summer herbs

i bought 3 baby basil plants during the weekend with miss c.
we went to canning vale sunday markets to pick up cheap herbs and plants.
it's so much better then paying premium prices from bunnings or other specialty garden places.

i cant wait till i can start harvesting...
i dont think i have to wait long... i need to make heaps of fresh vietnamese spring rolls for our melbourne cup pot luck lunch next tuesday.. and that mint is going to come in real handy!

best part about growing your own herbs? not paying stupid crazy $$ prices at the supermarket for a small bunch that only last for a few days. this way i dont waste anything! just take what you need.

check out my other babies below...

my baby basil, mint and coriander plants.

i have big plans for you babies!

my crazy amazing mint plant. they grow so fast when they are looked after properly...hehe
(mint was very neglected over winter)

my little garden patch :o)
they put a smile on my face when i come home and see them.
i just love to see how much they have grown in a day.
now i have a great supply of mint for my summer mojitos ... just need to organise a lime tree...hrmm..
green thumb clio.

currently reading....

the lost symbol by dan brown.

i'm only 2-3 chapters into the book and i'm hooked. i have enjoyed all the other dan brown books (yep ...i've read them all) but don't ask me detailed plot lines.. because i can't really remember them. especially deception point - no idea.

i look forward to curling up in bed at night to read 1-2 chapters, so i'm happy.
loving the gloomy yucky rainy weather we're having.
its perfect for curling up and sleeping in bed :o).

currently reading

the best part about being a teacher is being part of scholastic bookclub. remember the lucky, arrow, wombat and star book club catalogues we received in primary school? they have some pretty amazing book discounts, and as a teacher we get bonus incentives, free books and vouchers!! its a book worms dream :)

anyways i got my hands on this book(courtesy of bookclub) after realizing it was the winner of the newbery medal 2009. i kinda go on the premise that if a book won an award it cant be too bad. so far so good - i cant say its a page turner... its taken me about 1-2 months to complete it. if im really into a book i will try to finish it as soon as possible.

worth a read for something different.

if you're interested in finding the newbery medal award winners for previous years - just google it, you'll end up in wikipedia. i try to read books that have won a newbery medal award to my kids, so they get a chance to read something different.

BIG changes for 2010

i heard from a fellow teacher yesterday that there are goin to be BIG changes happening to staffing next year. we've already lost 2 of our 5 contract teachers (for next year) - which is super sad news, because i'm going to miss them a lot.

not only that, the principal is mixing up the teaching posts.

i just HOPE i get to stay in yr 5,
i am really loving yr 5 and i love working with my buddy teacher - because we get a long soooo well... because we're both so easy going.

cross my fingers...clio

i think i need to go shopping

my old trustworthy toshiba laptop is slowly dying one me.
there is a 2.5cm black vertical strip dividing my laptop screen - the strip - is what i think is dead pixals. its effing annoying. i cant look at anything with a full screen anymore - and i am limited to 2/3 of my screen... arghhhhhhhhhh ...i cant work under these conditions...

so when the tuff get going...the going goes shopping for a new lap top... hehehhe

now i need a certain family member to get their saggy ass back to perth to set up the wireless stuff... coz i cbf...

any donations or recs for a new lap top? im partial to toshibas but i will try anything....

home made martabak telur (egg) & fresh snack

this blog is slowly turning into a food blog.... i've cooked and eaten out so much lately - i cant help document the things i've eaten :o)... AND i have remembered to take photos!! something that almost never happens ... heheh

a while ago i had this fantabulous idea to make my own martabak telur - indo style. its a pretty simple recipe,

step 1. beef mince sauteed with finely chopped onions, salt, pepper and curry powder to taste.

step 2.then you crack some eggs into a bowl, add lots of finely chopped spring onions, the sauteed beef mince and mix mix mix!! add salt and pepper again for flavour.

step 3. in a shallow frying pan, add oil and put 1 sheet of spring roll skin flat on the pan. just make sure you work quickly, because the skin get crispy quick.

step 4. add the eggy mixture in the middle of the spring roll sheet - only about the size of your palm.

step 5. fold all the edges over to make a parcel envelope and flip till both sides are golden and crunchy.
the eggy mixture with beef and LOTS of spring onions

spring roll skin all folded up and flipped till golden and crispy

the final product, chopped into quarters - makes a tasty snack or treat.
think ill make this at the next dinner party - great finger food!

since making martabak is a long and time consuming exercise - i snacked on these in between the cooking steps. a yummy freshly peeled and cut pineapple...delish!
see miss m - i am trying to be healthy sometimes :P

Oakover Winery & Restaurant, Swan Valley

In early September we celebrated a small Santa girls renunion together with Father's Day at Oakover Winery in the Swan Valley. At first i had mixed feelings about the place, only because i am not a big fan of their wines. But .... you cant judge the food based on the wine right?
However when the food finally came along, we were all very happy - the aroma of the garlic bread and generosity of portions soon made us shut up and eat up.
Here are the different dishes we sampled that day - in no particular order.
(i can't seem to manipulate the pics on blogger so easily).

Miss M's fish, was light and cooked perfectly. The skin was delicously crispy, i'll have to come back and try that next time.

This was my beef cheek with snow peas and salad with truffle oil.
The beef cheeks were amazingly tender and gelatinous, the mushroom sauce could have used a little more seasoning (bit bland). However i couldnt taste the truffle oil, i guess that was my first time - so maybe i didnt know what flavour to look for. (and i think i ate my beef too quickly and i probably missed all the delicate flavours - woops)

Ms J's chicken with sweet potato mash - another delicious dish.

the entree: home made bread with a trio of dips.
1. olive oil and balsamic vinegar
2. olive tapenade
3. capsicum salsa (i forgot!)

the yummy garlic bread with parmesan cheese and mustard seeds for a twist.
Overall we were all very happy with the meals. It was an amazing package deal for Father's day.
3 courses for $35 - which is very reasonable for perth. (no alcohol - we dont really drink anyways)
The only let down was the dessert. I had an apple pie with ice cream - which was not a good choice the strawberry cheesecake was much better.
more food blogs to come. watch this space!

korean snacks

i have a very soft spot for chips and junk food. especially korean and japanese snacks, there's a great korean deli in willetton thats always well stocked with snacks and junk food. i can never resist going in there and trying something new.

this smoky bacon chips caught my eye and i had to take it home with me. i like bacon and i like chips - so this was a match made in heaven.

the chips had a light bacon flavour, not greasy at all - which is a great bonus.

Dim Sum in Northbridge

theres a quiet revolution happening in chinese restaurants across perth.
the good old family favourite chinese restaurants are still around but now there are new restaurants that have popped up recently that look real swanky and posh.
one of my favourites is the royal seafood chinese restaurant on aberdeen street.

they have an amazing selection of dim sum dishes, the usual old favourites (chicken feet, jellyfish, chiu cheong fun, fried squid etc) and some new and different ones which keeps things interesting. the dishes are tasty and full of flavour - unlike some other dim sum houses where it all looks good but it all taste the same - bland.

the foods great but i'd watch the order card, its easy to over do it and pay a hefty bill at the end of the meal, prices arent the cheapest. (we got carried away once and got the shock of the decade at the cash register).

but i still love the food there...

this is not meant to offend, but for those of us aussies living abroad... you have to read this for a bit of a laugh :o).

Subject: Australian Tourist Advice

These were posted on an Australian Tourism Website and the answers are the actual responses by the website officials, who obviously have a great sense of humour (not to mention a low tolerance threshold for cretins!)

wow its been about 7ish days since we started the lemon detox - in summary the detox was a complete failure.

ideally you are meant to be on the detox for 7-10 days.
in reality thats really f***** hard.
you're not allowed to eat any solid food.
you're only allowed to drink the lemon detox "tea" or water and nothing else.
we started slow and eased ourselves into diet mode.
fair enough ... i couldnt imagine giving up all food - cold turkey- thats hardcore and too hard to do for this food lover.
so we drank the lemon detox and slowly cut our food portions until we had no solid food and only drank the detox stuff.
it was hard and felt very wrong.
my tummy hated me.

so now the detox is nearly over.
thank god.
im never going to do it again unless im really desparate.
i love my food too much.

final weight: 54.9kg

hoping to get down to 50ish kg

lemon detox = not the way to lose weight = complete failure

tiramisu cupcakes

a very good friend of mine is coming over tomorrow and i had nothing to feed/entertain her.
so we made a batch of coffee & tiramisu cupcakes to go with mascarpone cheese topping.
the cupcakes were to die for when they came out of the oven and our lemon detox diet went out the window again... hehe....
here is the cupcake before assembly....

here they are after being "dressed"

they are too naughty to have in the house so hubby is taking them to work to "share" with his colleagues. luckily he works with LOTS of people

lemon detox diet

i've just put myself and hubby onto the lemon detox diet and we're failing miserably.
i dont think we're going to last.
its a pretty hardcore diet- you're not supposed to eat any solid food for about 5-7 days.
only think you're allowed to eat drink is water and this lemon detox drink made from some special maple syrup.
i'm going to keep trying anyways... i did spend $100 buying the syrup ... so i might as well finish it.
plus some people at work said it really works...
its just the not eating solid food part that's really hard for me.... because i love food...
i'll keep you updated on the progress as i go along.

Malaysia holiday : part 2

When Ming asked what we wanted to eat for dinner one night in KL
S and I quickly replied "Hawker Food!!" or basically anything in an old style family type food court. Ming said it could get a bit messy or dirty there since theres a wet night market near the food court, our reply..EVEN BETTER!!

as a tourist staying in the city, you wont really get the chance to hang out in local food courts with a nearby wet night market. so we were very eager to see what the markets had to offer.

first up, an oyster omelette ...i've never had it before and boy it tasted soo good.
the eggs were nice and fuffy, just the right amount of grease and the chilli had a nice sour tang to it... damn... it all went down soooo easy.

next... ming's cousin vincent bought a bundle of these.. malaysian otak otak.
i've had otak otak before, but indonesian style. these were the same but different at the same time. malaysian otak has spices and bumbu incorporated into the fish paste, indonesian otak otak is plain ... we add a peanut chilli sauce that adds the flavour in the end.

ming's fried udon noodle. (that's what they looked like)

and my laksa... it was not easy eating this in 30 degree humid weather. but i had to have laksa while i was in malaysia. i washed it down with a sugar cane drink as seen in the back ground.

last but not least... my all time favourite... chi cheong fun.
i cant believe they sell this stuff every where...
i've only ever seen chi cheong fun at dim sum... but hey.. im not complaining.

I love all this hawker food stuff,
the flavours are good and the prices are friendly!
really cant wait to go back to KL
